Shoulder Injury Treatment - When It Is Needed

The shoulder is composed of various bones connected together to form a movable joint. It is made up of the upper arm bone (humerus), shoulder blade bone (scapula), and collar bone (clavicle). The point at which these bones meet is the shoulder joint or the acromioclavicular joint. Each shoulder is held in place by a group of muscles and tendons called the rotator cuff, which protects the humerus and allows for lifting and moving the arm.

A shoulder injury can happen due to various causes. Oftentimes, the shoulder is injured due to repetitive motions of the arm, such as swimming, painting, and other tasks requiring arm movement. It can also happen because of accidents affecting the shoulder, such as sports and falls.

Rotator cuff problems

Rotator cuff tear is the most common condition that happens in the shoulder. A rotator cuff is a group of four muscles that help to rotate the arm and to stabilize the shoulder. Overusing the rotator cuff can lead to the inflammation of the tendons (tendinitis) or, in extreme cases, tearing.

A rotator cuff tear results in significant pain. Some other symptoms associated with a rotator cuff tear are;

Shoulder Injury Treatment in Canton, Ohio

Chiropractic care can help relieve and treat shoulder injury and pain. First, the chiropractor will evaluate the patient’s condition by performing a physical assessment and thorough history taking. This will help the doctor understand the condition, including the cause and how to go about the treatment plan. He or she may also request for an imaging study such as an X-ray or MRI to rule out any other possible underlying conditions.

Shoulder adjustments by a Chiropractor

Injuries to the shoulder can cause it to move out of alignment and cause inflammation, pain, and muscle spasms. The goal of chiropractic technique is to restore the body’s natural alignment to aid in the healing process. By making sure that the bones, ligaments, and tendons are aligned, the chiropractor can craft a treatment regimen that will strengthen the supporting structures around the injured shoulder and help the patient to recover.

Chiropractors help alleviate shoulder injuries by performing gentle shoulder manipulations and adjustments to restore its natural positioning. Most patients save time and money from surgery when they visit a chiropractor to repair their injured shoulders.

Some other ways chiropractic procedures relieve shoulder injury

Myofascial release - This therapy involves releasing tensed muscles and a contracted fascia that covers the muscles to relieve pain and swelling.

Electronic Stimulation - also known as E-Stim, this procedure helps relieve pain.

The Top 5 Myths About Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic care is one of the most popular non-invasive techniques used by 27 million Americans every year.

Chiropractors are healthcare professionals who use their hands to diagnose and treat a variety of conditions, much like massage therapists. Chiropractic care is based on the belief that the body has the ability to heal itself and that the nervous system plays a key role in this process.

As with any profession, there are bound to be some rumors floating around about chiropractors, so, in this article, we will debunk the top 5 most common myths about chiropractic care.

Chiropractors only treat low back pain.

chiropractor

Chiropractic procedures are an excellent alternative to treating most low back pains and preventing them from reoccurring. This is because most low back pains happen due to misalignment of the spine. Chiropractors help by carefully adjusting the vertebral column to restore the alignment of the spine and release pressure against any compressed nerves around the lower back.

However, chiropractors are not only experts when it comes to treating low back pain. Each year, approximately 27 million Americans visit a chiropractor to help with back pain, neck pain, migraines, and more. Chiropractic care is often thought of as a safe and effective alternative to medication or surgery, and it has been shown to be beneficial for many different types of conditions. In addition to pain relief, chiropractic care can also help to improve range of motion, increase flexibility, and reduce inflammation.

Once you see a chiropractor, you'll need to go forever.

As with any joint in the body, the spine is also susceptible to wear and tear as the person does everyday activities such as sleeping, sitting, walking, bending, or moving the body.

Visiting a chiropractor is almost the same as visiting the dentist regularly. Many people find that regular visits to the chiropractor can actually become a part of a healthy lifestyle. But chiropractors will not force you to have a continuous visit. Some patients visit a chiropractor only for immediate treatment of their condition, such as whiplash injury.

Chiropractic care can also be used as a preventative measure to keep the body healthy.

Chiropractic adjustments hurt.

Chiropractic adjustments are a simple and effective way to treat a variety of conditions. The adjustment itself is gentle and should not cause any discomfort. Some people may feel pops or cracks during the adjustment, but this is normal and should not be painful. After the adjustment, some people may experience mild soreness or minor aches. This is similar to the feeling you might have after exercising or stretching.

Overall, studies have shown that people who have experienced chronic pain and have undergone chiropractic measures demonstrated an increased quality of life after the procedure. That being said, adjustments are a great way to improve your overall health without taking any pain medication or missing work due to recovery time.

Chiropractic care is not covered by insurance.

Many people refuse to seek chiropractic help because of the misconception that it is too expensive. But the truth is that most insurance companies cover chiropractic techniques as a form of treatment for various procedures.

If you are considering chiropractic technique as an option to treat your condition, you can check with your insurance company about the coverage they provide for this option.

Chiropractors don't work with medical doctors.

Many people may not realize that chiropractors are actual doctors. In order to be eligible to practice chiropractic medicine in the United States, one must receive a Doctor of Chiropractic degree and pass several national board exams and exams in the state they wish to practice in.

A Doctor of Chiropractic degree can take up to four years to earn, and it must be obtained from an accredited institution. In addition to their academic coursework, chiropractors must also complete at least 1,000 hours of clinical training. Once they have completed their education, chiropractors must pass a series of national board exams before they can be licensed to practice in the United States. And if they wish to practice in more than one state, they will need to pass additional exams in each state.

Although they are not MDs, chiropractors go through extensive education and training to ensure they are qualified to provide quality care to their patients.

Sciatic Pain - The Causes and Treatments For Sciatica

Sciatic pain or Sciatica is a common ailment that can impact the quality of life. This pain ranges from mild and irritating ache to severe and disabling discomfort that makes simple activities of daily living a huge challenge.

This article will provide insights on what is Sciatica and the Sciatic Treatment in Canton, Ohio.

What are the causes of sciatic pain?

Sciatic pain arises from the compression of the Sciatic nerve, the body's longest nerve that originates from the buttocks area down to the lower limbs up to the toes. The compression can be a result of simple muscle stiffness or spasm as a result of prolonged awkward positioning, such as when sleeping or sitting for long periods. These types of sciatic pain usually resolve on their own with little to no medical intervention.

Some forms of Sciatica that do not go away after rest can be a cause of an underlying condition. The most common underlying conditions that result in sciatic pain are as follows.

Lumbar subluxation

Lumbar subluxation is a condition that occurs when the joints in your lower back become misaligned. This misalignment of the lower back joints causes compression and irritation of the sciatica nerve, which in turn results in the symptoms of Sciatica.

Problems in the intervertebral discs

The intervertebral discs separate each vertebra and act as a cushion between these bones. As a person ages, the intervertebral discs lose their elasticity and tone, therefore, causing the vertebrae to misalign or the discs to herniate. Both of these conditions result in the compression of the sciatic nerve.

Sciatic nerve entrapment (Piriformis Syndrome)

The sciatic nerve can be trapped by a condition called piriformis syndrome. The piriformis muscle is located in the buttocks region, and the sciatic nerve traverses this path; therefore, when this muscle gets spasms, the sciatic nerve is compressed, resulting in pain. Entrapment of the sciatic nerve can also happen because of poor body mechanics or acute injury to the hip area.

Options for sciatic treatment in Canton, Ohio

Chiropractic care is one of the most common and effective means to alleviate low back pain, including Sciatica. This is also an effective method of treating the underlying conditions associated with sciatic pain.

Chiropractic care is a form of alternative medicine that has been around for more than 100 years and deals with diagnosing and treating mechanical disorders in the spine. It is a non-invasive and drug-free treatment that helps alleviate pain and discomfort arising from the back and spinal area.

Chiropractors work by applying gentle manipulations around the spine to straighten the misalignments along the spine and relieve pressure on the surrounding muscles and nerves (including sciatic nerves).

How to chiropractors perform sciatic treatment in Canton, Ohio

The doctors at Belden Village Chiropractic Care and Wellness Center have been treating sciatica pain and other back problems through Chiropractic care for many years. The process typically involves obtaining a thorough history and physical exam. The doctors will also recommend diagnostics tests to better understand the problem and will review the findings and discuss them, including the treatment course with the patient.

Whiplash Injury Treatment in Canton Ohio

Whiplash injury is a collective term used to describe the symptoms that occur as a result of damage to the neck caused by certain accidents. The injury sustained in whiplash can extend from the intervertebral discs and ligaments to the neck muscles and the nerve roots.

What are the causes of Whiplash?

The most common cause of a whiplash injury is a rear-end collision. This occurs when the head jerks from backward to forward from the force of the collision. Whiplash can also happen due to sports injuries, assaults, or falls.

Symptoms of Whiplash Injury

Painful whiplash after car crash

The symptoms of whiplash may be delayed for about 24 hours following the accident. In general, people who experienced neck injury from whiplash develop the following within a few days after the initial trauma:

Whiplash Diagnosis

The licensed specialist will perform thorough physical tests in order to diagnose whiplash. In addition, they may suggest that the patient undergo a CT scan and X-ray to ensure that there are no underlying problems or complications causing the symptoms.

Home remedies for Whiplash

Rest: While it is necessary to keep the neck mobile to prevent joint and muscle stiffness, taking rest is also crucial for recovery. If a certain movement causes pain in the neck region, limit or avoid that movement until healing occurs.

Ice or heat: Alternating warm and cold compress can aid in healing and relieving pain. Ice prevents further inflammation while heat promotes increased blood flow that helps speed up healing. Apply a warm compress for 20 minutes twice a day and a cold compress for 20 minutes twice a day for the first three days following the injury.

Medications: Over-the-counter medications such as Non-steroidal Anti-inflammatory helps in reducing the pain sensation and inflammation. Take it as necessary or according to your physician’s advice.

Whiplash Injury Treatment in Canton Ohio

One of the most effective treatments for whiplash injury is chiropractic care. The chiropractor will check the whole spine and evaluate for any restricted joint motion, intervertebral disc injury, muscle spasm, and ligament injury. This assessment may use a technique such as motion and static palpation - diagnosis through touch.

The treatment will depend on the severity of the whiplash injury and if there are any underlying conditions. The most common chiropractic procedure involves the manual manipulation of the spine. These are some of the most common techniques used for spinal manipulation.

Flexion-distraction: This technique involves a hands-on approach with gentle and non-thrusting movement that also helps treat herniated discs. Instead of applying direct force to the spine, the chiropractor will use a slow pumping action on the discs if a bulge is suspected.

Instrument-assisted manipulation: This is another technique that uses a non-thrusting approach with the use of a specialized hand-held instrument. The chiropractor will apply force without thrusting into the spine to alleviate pressure on the muscles and nerves.

Specific spinal manipulation: This technique involves gentle manipulation that helps stretch the soft tissue and stimulates the nervous system by restoring the normal motion of the spine. This technique is useful particularly for subluxations, joints that have restricted motion or show abnormal movement.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Exercises

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a common condition that can cause pain, numbness, and tingling in the hand and arm. It is caused by pressure on the median nerve passing through the carpal tunnel, a narrow passageway in the wrist. People who work in repetitive motions that stress the hands, arms, or shoulders may be at greater risk for developing carpal tunnel syndrome.

Therapeutic exercises can be an effective treatment for mild to moderate symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome. Your doctor may recommend specific exercises that reduce pressure on the median nerve at your wrist, which in turn relieves symptoms of pain and discomfort associated with this condition.

Shaking

This exercise is useful when you suddenly feel numbness and tingling, especially at night. Shaking helps loosen the joints and wrist bones, which in turn reduces pressure from the median nerve.

Wrist flexor and extensor stretch

Tendon Glide

In this exercise, you'll use your fingers and hands to perform a variety of movements. Avoid changing positions quickly and take your time to slowly and carefully move to the next position.

Nerve Glide

Just as in the previous exercise, you will need to move through a series of positions. Do this in a careful and slow manner to prevent strain.

Wrist curl

You can perform this exercise while sitting down or standing up. You will need to use a small dumbbell or a can of beans weighing one pound.

Hand squeeze

This exercise will help you have a better and stronger grip.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a painful condition that can lead to serious nerve damage. If you are experiencing this pain, it's important to quickly take the necessary steps towards recovery. Exercise for carpal tunnel syndrome may help with mild or moderate cases of CTS but if your symptoms worsen over time and the pain becomes unbearable, seek medical consultation as soon as possible.

Our team specializes in treating Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. If you need help with your condition, contact us at Belden Village Chiropractic and Wellness Center.

Conservative Neck Pain Treatment in Canton Ohio

Neck pain can significantly affect your life and make it difficult for you to perform normal tasks such as sleeping, eating, bathing, or walking. About half of the people who suffer from neck pain experience it sporadically or as a chronic condition, despite the fact that it can go away on its own.

The cervical Spine and Neck Pain

The cervical spine is not only responsible for supporting the weight of your head but also allows smooth movement. Neck pain refers to any discomfort resulting from abnormalities or injuries in this important region, including muscles, ligaments, nerves, vertebrae, and joints. It's one among many health problems experienced by individuals at some point during their life span.

Neck pain can be an unpleasant, nagging sensation that you feel when bending over or twisting your neck, and it's typically aggravated by moving around, aside from pain. This condition may also be accompanied by muscle spasms, balance and gait problems, numbness and tingling, headache, dizziness, jaw pain, and tinnitus (ringing in the ears).

Ways to Manage Neck Pain Conservative-Neck-Pain-Treatment_Ohio

Neck pain usually happens due to strained muscles or pinched nerves, which resolves on their own even without medical procedures. Most people benefit from over-the-counter medications for pain, alternating warm and cold compress, and rest. In most cases, the condition resolves after 2-4 weeks but can also take up to eight weeks, depending on the severity.

Conservative treatment of Neck Pain in Canton, Ohio

Conservative treatment of neck pain in Canton Oh is performed by Dr. Brent Ungar at Belden Village Chiropractic & Wellness Center. Chiropractors perform gentle manipulations of the neck called cervical manipulation to loosen the joints around the cervical vertebrae. This approach removes pressures within the muscles and nerves caused by overstretching or herniated disc. Removing this pressure helps the patient to regain comfort and movement around the neck.

Doctors of Chiropractic are not only skilled at pinpointing what's wrong through physical exams and diagnostic tests, but they also know how to treat it. They provide treatment plans that include neck exercises to help maintain a healthy spine and lifestyle.

The goal of chiropractic treatment is to restore mobility in the joints and fix the source of pain instead of only focusing on the symptoms.

The Five Major Symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

The carpal tunnel is a narrow opening in the middle of the wrist where the median nerve passes through. The median nerve provides sensation and motor function to the wrist, forearm, and hands. When the median nerve gets compressed, a condition called Carpal Tunnel Syndrome happens.

Causes of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

The exact cause of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is unknown but it is linked to many risk factors.

Five Major Symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome usually begin slowly and gradually progress. Due to the usually curled positioning of the wrist when sleeping, most of the symptoms are felt at night and can wake people from sleep. This is also the first reported symptom of most patients diagnosed with the condition.

The symptoms include:

  1. Pain
  2. Numbness
  3. Tingling
  4. Weakness
  5. Electric shock sensation

The above symptoms are felt altogether in the same location around the wrist and hands. The discomfort begins from the wrist and travels throughout the hands towards the thumb, index, middle, and half of the ring fingers. Usually, the discomfort is relieved by shaking the hands.

As carpal tunnel syndrome progresses, the symptoms become more severe and can even result in atrophy (shrinking) of the base of the thumb.

Diagnosis

The first thing the doctor will look at is your medical history. The doctor will assess you based on the symptoms you describe and note any risk factors.

The doctor will also test you for the following:

Tinel’s Sign

This is checked by tapping a finger along the median nerve. When there is damage within the nerve, the person will experience pain and tingling during the process.

Phalen Test (Wrist flexion test)

The patient will lay his arm and elbow on a table in this test. The doctor will then allow the wrist to freely fall forward. When there is a compression of the median nerve, the patient will experience tingling and numbness within the fingers inside one minute. If these sensations are felt quicker, carpal tunnel syndrome is more severe.

X-ray

X-rays may be requested if there is a limited range of motion around the wrist or there is evidence of injury or arthritis.

Nerve Conduction studies or Electromyography

This study will provide details on how well the median nerve is working at controlling the muscles.

Prevention of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome can be difficult to prevent because there are too many activities that can predispose a person to this condition. The best actions are to avoid twisting and shaking the wrist excessively.

Other measures that can reduce your risk of developing this condition include

Conclusion

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a painful, debilitating condition that can cause numbness and tingle in the hand. Symptoms may be mild or severe depending on how much pressure has been applied to the median nerve over time.

If you are experiencing Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, you can contact us at Belden Village Chiropractic and Wellness Center to help you with the treatment.

Low Back Pain Exercise

Low back pain is one of the most common medical problems in the United States. It can affect people of all ages but is particularly prevalent in adults aged 30-50 years. Fortunately, there are steps to take in reducing and preventing low back pain, and one of the most common and easily accessible forms is exercise. Exercise not only helps keep your muscles strong but also strengthens your bones and improves your overall fitness level, which can help prevent injuries that might lead to low back pain.

Causes of Low Back Pain

The most common cause of low back pain is a strained or pulled muscle tendon or ligament. The strains may be due to the following reasons:

Methods of Treatment

Exercises to Prevent and Minimize Low Back Pain

Pelvic tilts can strengthen the abdominal muscle and back muscles associated with low back pain.

Steps:

Lie on your back with your knees bent and your feet flat on the floor.

Keep your stomach tight by pulling it in. As you do this, you will feel your spine being stretched.

Hold this position for about 10 seconds, then release to rest the area.

Repeat the routine for 8 to 10 more rounds.

This exercise targets a broad range of muscles supporting the lower back, such as the hamstrings, glutes, transverse abdominis, abdomen, and hips.

Steps:

Lie flat on your back with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor.

Slowly lift your buttocks by squeezing your glutes and pushing your heels on the floor while keeping your knees in a bent position and your arms flat on your sides.

Do this until your shoulders, hips, and knees form a straight line.

Hold this position for 8-10 seconds before releasing.

Repeat for 8-10 times

This exercise stretches your hip and lumbar spine muscles. This also relieves pressure on the spinal nerves as it extends the spaces between the vertebrae creating a wide area as the nerves exit the spine.

Steps:

Lie flat on your back with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor.

Draw one knee right up your chest while keeping the other in a bent position.

Hold this position for 15-30 seconds, ensuring that your back is flat on the floor.

Repeat the same exercise on the other knee.

Do this routine 10-12 times.

This exercise strengthens the spine and stretches the chest and abdomen. This also helps relieve pressure in the sciatic nerve, therefore, alleviating sciatica.

Steps:

Lie flat on your belly.

Place your arms on your side with your palms on the floor, and your elbows bent.

Slowly and carefully push yourself up, keeping your knees and legs flat on the floor.

Push your body up until your arms straighten, and your back is arched in a slight C position.

Hold this position for up to 10 seconds and take a rest in between.

Repeat 10-12 times.

Bird-dog exercise stretches and strengthens the glutes, erector spinae, and rectus abdominis. This helps in correcting the movement and stability of the whole body.

Steps:

Get in your hands and knees on the floor.

Tighten the muscles in your abdomen.

Lift and extend one of your legs and keep your hips level.

Hold your position for 5 seconds.

Repeat the same steps on the other leg.

Repeat the routine 10 times on each side.

Conclusion

The best way to avoid low back pain is by exercising regularly. Regular physical activity helps keep muscles strong and improves overall fitness levels, which can prevent you from getting injured in the first place. If you are experiencing back pain, our team of experts can help. Contact us now at Belden Village Chiropractic and Wellness Center

Chiropractic Care in the Canton OH Area

Chiropractors are in high demand these days. According to the American Chiropractic Association, more than 30 million Americans visit a chiropractor each year. Chiropractors believe that good health starts with a healthy spine, and they use manipulation and adjustment techniques to help restore spinal health. This approach has helped millions of people find relief from pain and improve their overall well-being.

What is Chiropractic Care?

Chiropractic Care or Technique is a form of healthcare that focuses on the alignment of the spine or joints of the body. Over the years, as we age, the bones forming the spine lose their alignment causing nerve compression and other conditions such as headache, fatigue, back pain, neck pain, and even depression.

Chiropractors perform gentle manipulation of the spine or joints to bring back each vertebra to its natural alignment and relieve tension in the surrounding muscles, nerves, and tissues.

Benefits of Chiropractic Techniques

  1. Pain relief
  2. Reduction in the intake of opioid medications
  3. Improved mobility
  4. Improved posture
  5. Eases persistent headaches
  6. Relieves back and/or neck pain
  7. The improved overall quality of life

Auto Accidents Causes & Prevention

Auto accidents are a leading cause of death and serious injury in the United States. Each year, more than 30,000 people die in auto accidents, and millions more are injured. In order to reduce your risk of being involved in an auto accident, it is important to understand the causes of auto accidents and take preventive measures. This blog post will discuss the most common causes of auto accidents and offer tips for avoiding them.

1. Rear-end collision

A rear-end collision is a type of car accident that most often occurs when one vehicle hits the back of another vehicle. These accidents can be relatively minor, but they can also cause serious injuries.

Prevention:

Keep a safe distance. It's always a good idea to stay at least three seconds behind the car in front of you. This gives drivers more time should they need it. In times of bad weather, expect heavy traffic, so make sure to extend your stopping distance.

Drive strategically. Avoid situations that may prompt you to suddenly use your brakes. If a car is following you too closely, there is a chance that you can be rear-ended.

Avoid distractions. Never take your eyes off the road. If there is a need for you to check something, you can pull over to check but never do this while driving. IF there is a driver in front of you who suddenly stops, it will only take less than a second to be rear-ended.

Do not drive under the influence or if you have taken sedating medications. It is always a safe practice to drive with a clear head. Anything that might affect your rational thinking should be avoided if you are going to drive.

2. Head-on crash

A head-on collision (also called a front-end collision) is a type of car accident that happens when the front ends of two vehicles collide. This is considered to be one of the most dangerous types of accidents, and it can lead to serious injuries or death.

Prevention:

Keep a minimum speed limit. Avoid going over the speed limit regardless of the road being empty, especially at night. When you are driving at top speed, there is a lesser time for you to avoid incoming vehicles heading straight at you.

Be more cautious on low visibility weather. Drive slowly and be more observant if there is a thick fog; this is both to prevent any form of collision and to minimize the impact should a collision happen.

Avoid driving when under the influence or after taking sedating medications.

3. Single-vehicle Accidents

Losses involving one vehicle can be caused by collisions with road barriers, debris, or animals, as well as rollovers or accidents when traveling off-road.

Prevention:

Focus on the road when driving

Avoid driving too fast

Drive at a speed that is just right for the weather

4. Sideswipe

A sideswipe car accident happens when a driver of one vehicle moves into the lane on an adjacent shoulder and collides with it. This typically occurs because they're driving too quickly to swerve back into their original path or if there aren't enough warning signs before making such an adjustment in speed.

Prevention:

Remain on the same lane as much as possible.

When changing lanes, do not rush and use your signals.

Drive carefully on an icy road to avoid slipping.

Check for any blind spots when changing lanes.

Conclusion:

Avoiding any major auto accident is a matter of safety, so make sure to pay attention when behind the wheel and avoid distractions, wear a seatbelt at all times (even if it's not mandatory in some states), and stay within the speed limit. Car accidents can be fatal and can cause severe consequences hence they should never be taken lightly.

If you have experienced car accidents and need help with injury treatment or rehabilitation, Belden Village Chiropractic & Wellness Center can help. Schedule your consultation now!
